Band

On April 14, 2026, the Adair County High School Band performed for students at Adair County Primary Center and Adair County Elementary School, sharing an exciting and educational musical program.

The performance followed a major accomplishment for the band. On March 26, they earned unanimous Distinguished ratings at the KMEA Concert Band Performance Assessment. To begin the program, they performed the two pieces featured in that assessment: Equilibrium by Michael Oare and Air for Band by Frank Erickson.

The band continued with a variety of selections, including Into the Clouds by Richard Saucedo, Demon Slayer by Michael Brown, and Tubs and Buckets by Chris Brooks. Throughout the performance, band director Mr. Jonathan Holmes provided helpful insight into each piece while also introducing students to the different instrument families—woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Several instruments were highlighted with short solo demonstrations, giving students a closer look (and listen) at each group.

One of the most exciting additions this year was a percussion ensemble featuring a full drum set and eight bucket drums. This high-energy performance kept students fully engaged and ended with a fun moment as performers placed buckets over their heads—earning enthusiastic reactions from the audience. The ensemble also featured a special guest appearance by ACES principal Jordan Williams on the drum set.

Another highlight of the program was a student favorite, Raining Tacos. This interactive piece had students dancing in their seats and joining in on a fun singing portion.

The program concluded with information about two upcoming opportunities for students. The Mini Color Guard Clinic will be held May 4, 5, and 7 for students in grades 1–5. Additionally, current 5th grade students (next year’s 6th graders) are invited to attend Band Sign-Up Night on May 8, where they will have the chance to try out different instruments and explore joining the band.

A special thank you goes to high school band director Jonathan Holmes and assistant director (and middle school director) Halen Pharis, as well as the Adair County students who performed for making this event such a memorable experience.
