The Adair County Primary Center brought the excitement of the Kentucky Derby to life on Friday, May 1, during its annual “Run for the Roses” celebration—an event that continues to be a favorite among students, staff, and families.
In the weeks leading up to the big day, students explored Derby traditions across multiple classes. In library, music, and computer lab they learned about the history and significance of the iconic race. Art classes buzzed with creativity as students crafted colorful horse heads to attach to pool noodles, transforming them into “stick horses” for race day. Meanwhile, in physical education, students practiced their racing skills through preliminary competitions. The excitement built throughout the week with themed dress-up days that added to the festive atmosphere.
The main event took place in the school gym, where students and staff gathered for a lively program filled with music, cheering, and friendly competition. Special guests from the Adair County High School Choir performed the National Anthem and “My Old Kentucky Home,” a cherished Derby tradition. A ceremonial “call to the post” signaled the start of the races, as young jockeys eagerly lined up with their handmade horses.
A crowd favorite each year, the staff race kicked off the competition. Faculty members, dressed as various characters, entertained the audience with their spirited performances. This year, Cassy Curry claimed the staff championship, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd.
Student races followed, with each classroom sending its top racer to compete against other class champions. These races determined grade-level winners, who then advanced to the final championship round. In an exciting finish, Kashtin Sallee, riding “Pippi Longstocking,” captured first place overall. Hudson Irvin, aboard “Richie Rich,” earned second place, while Tate Fudge, riding “Spot,” secured third.
The event showcased not only friendly competition but also creativity, school spirit, and community involvement. Students from all grade levels enthusiastically cheered on their peers, creating an encouraging and energetic environment throughout the day.
